Following the body’s movement rather than imposing a position on it is the whole principle of the Bascule Highback & Bench, developed by Studio Œ for Vitra. With its generously padded volumes and casual look, this set revisits the lounge chair by favoring a particularly free and intuitive sitting experience. Concealed under the padding, its toggle mechanism reacts directly to changes in user weight and accompanies each movement with minimal resistance. This allows the Bascule Highback & Bench to move naturally from an upright position to a deeply tilted, almost horizontal, posture without requiring manual adjustment. In its Highback version, the backrest is extended by a built-in headrest, designed to comfortably support the head and neck when reclining. The matching bench completes the set and can be used as a footrest to prolong the relaxing position. The coating work fully participates in the design of the scale. To develop it, Studio Œ drew inspiration from fashion-inspired tailoring techniques. The cover thus envelops the structure like a carefully fitted garment and can be removed for cleaning or replacement. The various padding elements are also designed without glue or adhesive to facilitate their repair or replacement if necessary. In this configuration, the Bascule Highback & Bench is based on a wooden base, which gives its contemporary silhouette a warmer presence.
